Ust-Donetskiy district is situated at the very center of Rostov region and boarders with Belokalitvenskiy district to the north, to the east – with Konstantinovskiy and Semikarakorskiy, to the south – with Bagaevskiy, to the west – with Oktyabrskiy districts of Rostov region. Its territory is washed by the two largest Rostov region rivers – the Don and the Severskiy Donets.

The district administrative center is village Ust-Donetskiy, the workers settlements. It is located at the high right bank of the river Severskiy Donets, 4 km away from the river confluent with the Don. The workers settlement Ust-Donetskiy history origins from the Cossack village Khresttsy (Kresty), by the stanitsa Kochetovskaya, founded back in 1837. In 1958, the settlement, located at the port construction territory, was named village Ust-Donetskiy.
