Novocherkassk is one of large towns in the South of Russia. It is peculiar not only in its glorious history, but also in remarkable features: outline, architecture, unique historical monuments. Novocherkassk was designed and founded in 1805 as a new capital for the Don Cossacks Army Region. Within more than a century that was a town of the Don Cossacks elite: Cossacks atamans, military administration, army officers, officialdom, educational and cultural center.
Town of Novocherkassk was founded May 18 by Old Style (May 30 by New Style) 1805 by the Don Cossacks Army Ataman Matvey Ivanovich Platov, the town project was designed by the military engineer lieutenant-general Franz Devolan.
Due to its status of the Don Cossacks Army administrative center, the town was mainly populated by the Cossacks, with a small number of nonresidents and people of other nationalities.
From 1917 to January 1920, Novocherkassk was a center of the counterrevolution. After the Soviet Government establishing here on January 7, 1920, Novocherkassk changed its Cossacks capital status to the district and later on town center and became the Don land large industrial, scientific and cultural center.
Novocherkassk is a town of Rostov-on-Don regional subordination. It boarders with Oktyabrskyi and Aksayskyi rural districts of Rostov region, The general town area is 13412,1 hectares (within the town boarder - 12297, 9 hectares). The population is 184,5 thousand people.
Novocherkassk regular citizens are 180 thousand people. It is remarkable, that one third of the population are children and students, one third – adults, and one third – retirees. The town is inhabited by people of 88 nationalities, the majority of them being the Russian. Also there are 60 thousand of war and labor veterans, 50 thousand students, 48 thousand industry, commerce and service workers.
There are 23 large and medium scale and more than 250 small-scale enterprises on the towns territory.
Novocherkassk industrial trades are represented by: power industry, engineering industry, non-ferrous metallurgy, chemical, light and food industries, glass packing and building materials production.
In 2004, the large and medium scale industrial enterprises production and service output summed in 12 874,6 million rubles. The industrial index of actual volume in January – December 2004 resulted in 114,4%. The production volume industrial share was 87,0%.
The leading town enterprises are "Novocherkassk EPS" PC, “Novocherkassk electric locomotive constructing plant” CC, “Novocherkassk electrode plant” PC and “Novocherkassk synthetic products plant”, PC.
Novocherkassk is inhabited by 200 thousand people of 88 nationalities, there are 60 thousand of war and labor veterans, 50 thousand students, 48 thousand industry, commerce and service workers.
