The Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University is the only botanical research institution of the Rostov region, the largest botanical garden in southern Russia.
According to the international classification, the Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University is a type of classical multipurpose botanical garden - an organization with a wide field of activity, including scientific, educational, environmental protection and educational work.
In 2007, by decision of the International Council of Botanic Gardens (London), the Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University as the sole representative from Russia was included in the international catalog “Botanical Gardens. Living History ”, where the history of the Botanical Gardens of the World is illuminated, starting from the 16th century, and each country is represented by one botanical garden. Botanical Garden SFU is a full member of the Regional Council of Botanical Gardens of the North Caucasus, the Council of Botanical Gardens of Russia and the International Council of Botanical Gardens on Plant Protection (BGCI).
In 2018, by order of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation of 07.05.2018 No. 187, the Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University was given the status of a specially protected natural area of federal significance, which is under the jurisdiction of the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education "Southern Federal University" science of the Russian Federation. Botanical Gardens SFU is a member of the Council of Botanical Gardens of Russia. The new status is a new impetus to the development of the Botanical Garden, as well as new opportunities and prospects.
